Lancing Beach Green latest    18th February 2009

Residents may be interested to learn what is happening on Beach Green as it appears that things have gone somewhat quite. This is the latest information we have at the time of going to press.

Green, green grass….of Beach Green

Restoration works on the Green are in hand. However due to circumstances the Council has decided to put off the major infilling and turfing works until September but attend to some minor areas in the interim. The main reasons for the rescheduling is firstly to avoid disruptions to the planned events on the Green this year, which include the popular Bank Holiday markets and the Lancing Carnival and secondly to avoid the possibility of losing the newly laid turf if we have a long hot summer (here’s hoping!).

Business as usual….another cuppa

The new kiosk is due out to tender next month and a start on the new building is expected in the spring. Keeley Ward, the proprietor, will continue operating out of the old kiosk until the new one is ready so customers will not suffer any stoppage of service.

All change…the building now standing

Works on the Murphy’s bar site has been temporarily halted whilst the developer seeks permissions for planning and structural modifications.  The building has been secured and works are expected to recommence in May.

We will keep residents informed of any developments on Beach Green as they happen.

DO NOT FEED THE SWANS AT WIDEWATER!

We have had a request from the WSCC Ranger service to ask residents not to feed the swans at Widewater. We realise that feeding the swans can bring a certain amount of pleasure to people, however too much feeding and we could loose what we have.

Normally there are only one or two resident pairs of swans on Widewater but there has been a recent influx of swans due to the abundance of food being made available.

This could have serious consequences as follows:-

  • The lagoon cannot support the current levels of wild fowl
  • As there is no natural flow of water the amount of swan droppings will settle on the bed of Widewater and will eventually cause a problem with pollution. This could be in the form of smells, algae blooms or most importantly the marine Biodiversity within the area will change.
  • The food is also attracting rats, which is obviously undesirable.

Swans do however require fresh water so please stop feeding the swans and instead put out bowls of water.

Thank you for your cooperation.
