Lancing Parish Council Deny Rumours

Lancing Parish Council sincerely regrets the serious breach of confidentiality by a councillor or councillors.  It is a fundamental principle of the Council's adopted procedures that confidentiality is observed at all times.  The Parish Council therefore apologises unreservedly to Mr Wickens and his family for any distress caused by this breach.

Currently rumours and misinformation are being circulated that the Clerk will be receiving £15,000 pa for the next five years from the Parish Council - This is completely untrue.

The 7.1% increase in the precept quoted on a local website is being wrongly attributed to the Clerk's departure; In fact this precept has been set in accordance with the Council's previously approved revenue and capital programs.

 PRESS STATEMENT

Lancing Parish Council has had the benefit of Mr Richard Wickens as Clerk for the past eight (8) years.  During that time the Council has moved forward in a very positive manner, becoming a Quality Council in 2004.

We have now reached the point where the Council needs to adopt a different staff structure to give greater emphasis to outside activities, therefore The Council and Mr Wickens have agreed early retirement terms in accordance with the L.G.P.S.

The Council has always been very satisfied with the guidance and support provided by Mr Wickens and extend to him and his family good wishes for the future.

Signed  Cllr Angela Mills    Chairman to L.P.C.

February 2008

Dear Resident
You will be aware a vessel, the 'Ice Prince', sank 25 nautical miles South of Portland on the evening of the 14th January 2008. After a fairly dramatic rescue of all 20 crew it now sits in 62 metres of water on the seabed.
The vessel owners have appointed contractors who are currently working on a plan to decide how best to recover the oil and pollutants that are currently contained within tanks on the vessel. This is to minimise the risk of environmental impact.
Around 2000 tons of timber carried on deck was lost to the sea and some of this cargo made its way up the Channel and came ashore along the Sussex coast, including Southwick, Shoreham and Lancing beaches.
The contractors are also responsible for recovery of the timber cargo. During the past 2 weeks the timber has been moved from the low water mark to above the high water mark. It will then been moved to collection areas for recycling.
The timber will be removed in the next week by a method known as ‘chipping’ this will reduce the timber to bio mass to be removed by goods vehicles. The process will use mechanical handling to feed timber into a machine designed to chip the wood with a minimum impact on the environment. This method will reduce vehicle movements compared with loading vehicles on site and transporting the timber to other sites. Noise tests have been undertaken and these indicate a decibel level of 75 decibels at 50 metres. The work will take place in areas that are at least 100 metres from properties and will be restricted to daylight hours. It is anticipated that the work in this area will be complete within 5 days.
Lancing Parish Council and Adur District Council are working closely with the contractors to resolve this situation and reduce the impact of the timber on the beaches with removal by the best possible means.
